Circumcision Pain – how painful is circumcision for men?

Circumcision pain – the answers below are what you can expect?

  • A surgical procedure is done under a local painkiller.
  • You will not feel any pain during the procedure.
  • When the painkiller wears off, you may experience a little pain.
  • Lastly, our nurse or doctor who performs the procedure will provide you with painkillers to help you deal with pain.

Most patients go home the same day after the surgery. Your penis may swell and bruise for the first 2 days. It is generally not very painful, and over-the-counter pain relievers are all you usually need to ease any discomfort. You will probably have a dressing over the area or over your entire penis.

If you experience any of the symptoms listed below seek immediate medical care:

  • You have circumcision pain that does not subside after you take pain medicine.
  • You have loose stitches or your incision comes open.
  • Bright red blood soaks through the bandages.
  • If you have signs of infection, such as:
    • Increased pain, swelling, warmth, or redness.
    • Red streaks leading from the area.
    • Pus draining from the area.
    • A fever.
  • You cannot urinate.
  • You have symptoms of a urinary tract infection. These may include:
    • Firstly, pain or burning when you urinate.
    • Secondly, frequent need to urinate without being able to pass much urine.
    • Thirdly, pain in the flank, which is just below the rib cage and above the waist on either side of the back.
    • Blood in your urine.
    • A fever.
  • You are sick to your stomach or cannot drink fluids.
  • You have signs of a blood clot in your leg (called a deep vein thrombosis), such as:
    • Pain in your calf, back of the knee, thigh, or groin.
    • Redness or swelling in your leg.

Circumcision Healing – how long does it take to heal?

Circumcision healing – so how long does it take?

Recovery timeline

In the time after the surgery, you’ll likely experience swelling and bruising on and around the penis. This is to be expected. Apply an ice pack to your groin area for 10 to 20 minute windows of time every two hours. Be sure to put a thin piece of fabric between the ice and your skin.

Recovery from adult circumcision typically takes two to three weeks. You may need to request a week off from work. Some people will not be able to return to normal activities for longer.

For the first few days of recovery, it is important the dressings around your penis stay clean so you can reduce the risk of infection and aid your circumcision healing. On day two or three, your doctor may ask you to return to their office to have the dressings replaced.

After consulting and getting your doctor’s permission, you may be able to return to normal activity, including exercise, four weeks after the procedure. In addition, masturbating and sexual intercourse may need a slightly longer waiting time, like up to six weeks.

In conclusion, your doctor can advise you on an appropriate turnaround time based on your individual healing and health.

How can you care for yourself at home when recovering from circumcision?

Activity
  • Rest if you feel tired. Getting enough sleep as this will help you recover.
  • Try to get exercise and walk each day. Start by walking a little more than you did the day before. Each day you can increase the distance you walk.
  • You can shower when you have removed the bandage on your penis. Pat the incision dry. You may also take a short bath if you wish.
  • Avoid strenuous activities, such as riding a bicycle, weight lifting, jogging or aerobic exercise, for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay.
  • When you are comfortable you can return to work and normal activities.
Diet
  • You can eat according to your normal diet.
  • If your stomach is upset, try bland, low-fat foods like plain rice, chicken, toast, and yogurt.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (unless your doctor advises against it).
Incision care
  • Remove the dressing only when your doctor says it is okay. Do this by soaking it in a warm bath. Always wear underwear that is comfortable for you. Some men do prefer a snug fit for support, while others prefer loose-fitting briefs.
Ice and elevation
  • Put some ice or a cold pack on your groin for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Try to do this every 1 to 2 hours for the first day. Ensure you place a cloth between the ice and your skin.
  • You should try to position your penis so that your underwear keeps it upright.
